I think the time we are living in is really an excellent one to make new observations. In cricket, for example, a long line of greats have just finished their careers, or are on the verge of doing the same, like Ricky Ponting, Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, Muttiah Muralitharan and so on. It is their moment to claim their rightful positions in the realm of the pantheon of greats.

In football too, superstars like Ronaldinho, Maldini, Oliver Kahn, not to mention new guns like Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi are all set to stake their claims over the past greats.
On top of that, I like to make my observations on a step-by-step basis. So, I will first make lists on specific positions. In the case of football, it will go like this: The Greatest Ever
- Goal-Keepers - Right Backs - Left Backs - Center Backs - Wingers - Defensive and Box-to-Box Midfielders - Central Attacking & Holding Midfielders - Second Strikers - Strikers.
and for cricket:

And then, I would move on to the best teams.
